Not-For-Profit & Government

Foundations

Foundations are highly visible representatives of the not-for-profit sector and, as such, represent the largest segment of our group’s not-for-profit practice. We serve more than 110 independent grant-making foundations, community foundations, and operating foundations throughout the Western United States, most are large entities with hundreds of millions of dollars in assets. As funding intermediaries, foundations distribute grants from earnings of endowment investments and other sources, as well as contributions from donors, all of which require the specialized services we provide.

Tax Compliance Services and Consulting

Our not-for-profit tax team works with all types of foundations, from public community foundations to private family foundations and everything in between. We help address your most common tax compliance issues, such as completing the IRS Form 990 or Form 990-PF, excise taxes, minimum required distribution planning, and unrelated business income. Other tax consulting services we provide for foundations include:

  • Planned giving and charitable contributions
  • Operations planning relating to self-dealing rules
  • Private operating foundation status analysis
  • Termination of private foundation status for organizations qualifying as public charities
  • Compliance with IRS and OFAC rules relating to giving to international organizations
  • Working with donor advised funds and donor communication
  • Meeting the expenditure responsibility rules
  • Supporting organization issues

Endowment Management and Performance

Effective investment management for a foundation begins with comprehensive financial planning. Moss Adams Wealth Advisors LLC (MAWA) can help with the complexities of investing your foundation’s assets by helping you ensure you are prepared for an audit and you are carrying out your fiduciary responsibilities. MAWA professionals can also work with you to design a plan to help achieve stable investment returns for your foundation, protect principal investments from capital losses, and reduce the effects of inflation on assets and spending policy. They understand the reporting and other requirements of not-for-profit audit committees and boards of directors.

Audits, Assurance, and Business Consulting

Not every foundation requires an audit, but those that do receive comprehensive financial statement audits from the professionals in our group. To supplement these core services for foundations, we also provide:
