It’s unusual to take pride in losing one of our brightest accountants, but in this case we’ll make an exception—especially since it’s only temporary.
Last month the SEC selected John Donohue, an assurance senior manager based in our Portland office, for a prestigious two-year term as a Professional Accounting Fellow (PAF) in the agency’s Office of the Chief Accountant (OCA). Donohue becomes the fifth Moss Adams professional to be chosen by the SEC for a PAF—joining the ranks of Seattle partners David Follett and Fred Frank and Los Angeles partners Jason Lawson and Todd Van der Wel—but the first to join the OCA. (The other four had all been selected by the agency’s Department of Corporate Finance.)
Donohue joined Moss Adams in 2002 and has focused his practice on the financial services industry, working with both public and private entities. He’s been involved with numerous special projects on behalf of clients, including private placement offerings, public offerings, and 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K filings. At the SEC he’ll study and help develop rule proposals pertaining to federal securities law; liaise with accounting, auditing, and other standard-setting bodies; and consult with public companies on accounting and financial reporting matters.
Begun in 1972, the PAF program provides participants with a unique public service opportunity to work on behalf of both investors and SEC registrants. The application process is a competitive one, and it’s rare for an accountant from a middle-market firm to be selected.
“I’m thrilled and honored,” Donohue said. “It will be difficult to leave my clients and colleagues for the next two years, but when I return, the experience and knowledge I will have gained from my time at the SEC will be of great value to both Moss Adams and our clients.”
The firm’s president and CEO, Rick Anderson, agreed. “Replacing John’s skills and demonstrated leadership ability for the next two years won’t be easy, but we’re confident he’ll flourish at the SEC and come back with new skills that will benefit both the firm and our clients,” he said. “We’re excited about John’s opportunity. But, of course, we look forward to his return to Moss Adams in the fall of 2012.”
