Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, recently appointed Leonard Sanchez, tax partner in our Albuquerque office, to the State of New Mexico Reinstated Ethics Reform Task Force in April 2007. Sanchez served as a member of the original Ethics Reform Task Force formed in 2006 to study the issues of governmental ethics and campaign financial reform.
Co-chaired by former New Mexico Governor Gary Carruthers, Dean of the New Mexico State University College of Business Administration and Economics, and Suellyn Scarnecchia, Dean of the University of New Mexico School of Law, the new task force consists of 21 members.
Representatives come from local, state, and tribal government, not-for-profit organizations, the general public, and the business community. Sanchez is the only CPA serving on the committee.
The first task force made recommendations to the governor and certain legislators introduced portions of their recommendations during the January 15, 2007 to March 15, 2007 session.
However, the House and Senate did not get the bills in for vote before the regular legislated session was over. Following the session, other items of corruption came to light convincing the governor to reactivate the committee.
Sanchez has been in public accounting for more than 30 years and has been extremely active in support of our profession. Governor Richardson appointed Leonard to the New Mexico Public Accountancy Board where he is now in his second term.
