Investing in Our People: ‘It Takes a Village’

Moss Adams is committed to empowering underrepresented talent to build meaningful connections within our industry and beyond.

This year, Moss Adams expanded our sponsorships of highly regarded conferences supporting underrepresented talent.

For the first time, Moss Adams financially supported the Global Conference & Expo hosted by Disability:IN, which included expenses for nine team members to represent the firm at the event—tripling our total Moss Adams attendees from 2023.

Meaningful Investments

This year’s sponsorships covered all event-related expenses for more than 130 Moss Adams team members to attend professional development sessions and networking events across five conferences.

Jennie Ly, senior manager and co-leader of the Asian BRG, observed a larger investment than those made by the firm’s peers in the industry.

“It’s not just the financial support that speaks volumes but the time. All 48 individuals who attended Ascend had the support to be fully present instead of splitting our time with client work. Also, CEO Eric Miles made time to participate. That says plenty about how important inclusion and diversity (I&D) is to him.”

During the Ascend conference, an annual event for Pan-Asian professionals and allies, the Asian BRG was recognized for the impact of their work at Moss Adams with the Ascend ERG Impact Award, which Jennie accepted in front of nearly 2,500 attendees. Eric Miles was also one of six participants in a panel about allyship in the workplace.

“I don’t think the Asian BRG could have come this far without the support system of our I&D initiatives,” said Jennie. “In my acceptance speech, I talked about how it takes a village to support our underrepresented folks and acknowledged that we came with our I&D board members and CEO to pull each other upward. We’re a village, not a competition.”

Uplifting the Village

The firm sent 34 attendees to the National Association of Black Accountants convention and 41 attendees to the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) convention. Though the firm sponsored more than 11 attendees for the Out & Equal Workplace Summit, the in-person event was canceled due to safety concerns ahead of Hurricane Milton.

During the ALPFA convention, the LatinX BRG hosted a panel discussing personal experiences and challenges with career advancement. Vanessa Oviatt, senior manager and LatinX BRG treasurer, was one of four panelists. This was Vanessa’s second time at ALPFA, and she was “electrified” by the opportunity to authentically connect with thousands of professionals and students with shared cultural experiences.

“People are more energized and passionate about their work when they have a safe place to gather. Sometimes, it’s the first time you’re meeting your colleagues in person—that’s the best part,” Vanessa said.

ALPFA attendees returned to Moss Adams enthusiastic about supporting the needs of the Latinx community within the firm and beyond, with many regional chapters pursuing opportunities to connect with high school and college students interested in an accounting career.

Vanessa shared, “A big part of our conference attendance is recruiting, and many of us are involved in community outreach. Creating that sense of community pushes our initiatives forward. When we get a group passionate about leading these efforts, it translates into employee retention.”
